Roraima is the northernmost Brazilian state, making border with Venezuela and Guyanas. Roraima has several mountain chains, with some of the highest altitudes of Brazil.

The lands of Roraima were disputed by Brazilians, Dutch, Spaniards and British. Boa Vista, the capital city, was founded by the Brazilians in 1858, but only in 1904, when Italian Vitor Emanuel II was arbiter between Brazilian-British dispute, was the Brazilian dominance accepted by the neighbours.

In 1943, the state of Amazonas was broken down in pieces, one of which became the Territory of Rio Branco, which eventually became the Territory of Roraima (Territories don't elect a governor or representatives; the Federal governmnet administrates the territories). In 1988, the new Constitution elevated Roraima to the category of State.
