The state of Tocantins was created by the Constitution of 1988; it was part of the state of Goiás.

The economy is based on agriculture; the plain lands of Tocantins see some of the biggest farms of the country, all devoted to intensive plantation of soy, corn and other tradeable commodities. Also, much of the infra-structure is under construction, which helps boost the sector.
